Impressions:
The art of parody has fallen on hard times in recent years, and you have to look back at a film like this to see how parody is done right. Particularly looking back on it now, it's hard not to be impressed by all the work that went into this. Sets, costuming and effects are all on par if not superior to a number of the non-parodical offerings from the time period. And while this is a parody, it has its own story which is actually rather solid. Yes, the humor can be lowbrow at times, but you gotta appeal to the groundlings. The entire cast delivers impressively, but the real standouts in the cast are Rick Moranis as Dark Helmet, John Candy as Barf and director Mel Brooks himself as both President Skroob and Yogurt. There are plenty of laughs to be had and the film deserves to be seen if not added to your collection. Give this one a watch and may da Schvartz be wit' you.
