Synopsis:
A pair of salvagers venture down the Niger River in search of a lost Confederate ironclad accompanied by a couple of WHO doctors tracking down the source of a potential epidemic.
Impressions:
I haven't read any of Clive Cussler's books, but I'm aware that this isn't a faithful adaptation of the source material. I'm not going to dwell on that, though. I'm just going to look at the movie for what it is. Some people don't like it, but I thought it was a good adventure flick. It banks heavily on Matthew McConaughey's appeal and utilizes Steve Zahn's knack for comic relief. There's good action and a decent plot. Lennie James and Lambert Wilson make a good villainous duo as the Malian dictator General Kazim and corrupt French industrialist Yves Massarde. I also liked Maurice Lee as the assassin Zakara. The music by Clint Mansell is also fairly memorable and good accompaniment to the action. It's worth watching, so give it a chance.
